If you’re concerned about your child’s learning, behavior, or emotional well-being, you’re not alone — and understanding what’s going on is the first step toward finding the right support. A neuropsychological assessment offers a comprehensive, in-depth look at how your child’s brain is functioning and how it impacts their day-to-day life. Conducted by a pediatric neuropsychologist, this evaluation provides valuable insights that can help identify strengths, pinpoint challenges, and create personalized strategies for success at home, school, and beyond. We’re here to guide you through this process with compassion, expertise, and a focus on your child’s well-being.
A neuropsychological assessment helps us understand how your child’s brain is working — and how that affects their behavior, emotions, and learning. It looks deeper than just IQ or school performance. During the assessment, we explore important thinking skills like attention, memory, language, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and more. We also look at how your child processes information, handles challenges, and adapts to different situations. This type of evaluation is more detailed than standard testing, and usually takes longer to complete. It’s designed to uncover both your child’s strengths and the areas where they may be struggling. Neuropsychological assessments can help answer questions like:
- Why is my child having difficulty learning?
- What are my child’s unique strengths?
- What supports or interventions will help my child thrive at school, at home, and in daily life?
In the end, we gather all the information needed to provide a clear diagnosis (if there is one) and create a personalized plan to support your child’s growth and success.
How Can a Neuropsychological Assessment Help Your Child?
A neuropsychological assessment can:
- Identify neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and learning disabilities.
- Guide educational planning by providing recommendations for school accommodations and intervention plan (PI).
- Inform treatment strategies by helping clinicians develop effective therapeutic interventions tailored to the child’s needs
- Monitor progress; serving as a baseline to track developmental changes over time
By understanding the underlying factors affecting your child’s behavior and learning, you can better support.

Steps of a Neuropsychological Evaluation
1.
Clinical Interview
Dr. Leon will conduct a 1–1.5-hour clinical interview with you — and, depending on their age, your child — to gather developmental, medical, and educational history.
2.
Record Review
Dr. Leon will ask you to share any relevant records, such as past school reports, hearing tests, speech-language assessments, occupational or physical therapy evaluations, and/or medical records.
3.
Standardized Testing
Dr. Leon will conduct standardized testing with your child. The duration typically ranges from 1 to 7 hours, depending on your child’s age and the specific concerns being assessed.
4.
Questionnaires
To better understand your child’s functioning at home and at school, Dr. Leon will ask parents, teachers, and, when appropriate, the child or teen themselves to complete standardized questionnaires.
5.
Feedback and Report
Dr. Leon will meet with you (and possibly your child, depending on their age) for a 1-hour feedback session. During this meeting, she will share her observations, clinical impressions, any diagnoses (if applicable), and personalized recommendations. After the session, she will finalize the report and send it to you.

Neuropsychology & ADHD Assessment
Comprehensive Assessments
At Leon Psychology Clinic we believe that to provide a true profile of a child’s functioning and provide accurate diagnoses, we need to assess all areas of functioning. Our standardized testing covers IQ, language skills, visuo-spatial and fine motor skills, memory, attention executive functioning and academics, while our psychological evaluation covers socio-emotional functioning.
Individualized Approach
In testing cognition, how a child arrives at their score is just as important as the score itself. Regardless of whether your child receives a diagnosis or not, we provide a profile of your child’s strengths and weaknesses with appropriate recommendations to support or maximize their functioning at home and at school.
We collaborate with schools and other health professionals
Has your child already gotten a diagnosis or assessment elsewhere, are they followed at the hospital or waiting on a class assignment at school? As part of the assessment (with parental or adolescent consent), we can also connect with your child’s care team to ensure everyone is working together.
Please Note:
We want to emphasize that while we offer comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, we do not offer autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessments.
When Should You Consider an Assessment?
Consider seeking a neuropsychological assessment if your child:
- Exhibits persistent academic struggles despite interventions
- Shows signs of attention, memory, or organizational difficulties
- Displays behavioral or emotional challenges
- Has a history of neurological conditions or developmental delays
Early identification and intervention can significantly improve outcomes, making assessments a valuable tool in supporting your child’s well-being.
Neuropsychology Assessment FAQs
How long is a neuropsychology assessment?
The duration of a child neuropsychological assessment can vary based on factors such as the child’s age, specific concerns, and the comprehensiveness of the evaluation. For preschool children (age 3-5), 1-3 hours of direct testing is typical. For children and teens (age 6-18), it can take 4 to 7 hours of testing, which is spread over multiple sessions.
It’s important to note that the total time commitment includes not only the direct testing but also the initial interview, scoring, interpretation of results, and the feedback session. The entire process aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the child’s strengths and areas where support may be needed.

- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
